The TikTok-isation of Social Media

Despite the title of this article, this isn't just about Tiktok. All social media platforms are undergoing a huge shift at the moment. A shift from a social graph to an interest graph.

What This Shift is All About

When scrolling through social media feeds before, you only saw content from friends and pages you followed.

TikTok disrupted this model with a feed that's based on what you like, instead of who you follow. So you can post on TikTok with zero followers, and get seen by thousands of people who share the same interests.

And all the other platforms are moving in the same direction. Instagram launched 'Reels'. Youtube has 'Shorts'. LinkedIn is adding more and more 'Suggested Posts' to our feeds.

But What Does This Mean for You?

If you are a business owner, this means your content matters more, and more, and more.

It's not about growing a huge following anymore. The game is about the quality and relevance of your content around different interests. These are the new keys to visibility and engagement.

And if done right, you can reach a lot of people, even if they haven't followed you before.

Here Are Some Things You Can Do

  1. Create interest-based content

Develop content that aligns with the interests of your ideal customer profiles. You can use analytics tools to identify trending topics and more.

  2. Hook, retain and reward

It's all about attention. And the competition for it is high. You need to hook people's attention to get them interested. You need to retain their attention. And you need to make it worth their time - reward them.

  3. Use hashtags strategically

Hashtags are a powerful tool for increasing the visibility of your content. Use trending and relevant hashtags to appear in searches for even more visibility.

Final Thoughts

The TikTok-isation of social media is more than a trend. It's a transformative shift towards more personalised, interest-driven experiences for users.
